HOMECorp Community Garden Bringing Montclair Together
Montclair, July 2010 — Members of the Montclair community have gathered this spring and summer to cultivate the spirit of neighborhood and diversity by growing food in the HOMECorp Community Garden located on Miller Street. The garden, which is coordinated by volunteer and Glen Ridge resident Tim DeLorm, is poised to be a space of creative collaboration among various individuals and organizations. Doreen Neil Harris is the HOMECorp tenant garden coordinator who oversees tenant participation in the project. For $20 a plot, volunteers are encouraged to plant the vegetation of their choice and receive the benefit of growing a beautiful garden.
The garden is available to community members of all ages and is accessible to volunteers with physical disabilities. Over the course of the gardening season there are opportunities for planting and maintenance responsibilities. The garden practices sustainable and organic gardening methods, teaches about gardening to new gardeners of all ages, and provides a space for residents to grow food. There is composting, and recycling on site. The space is open to all residents to participate so an organized system of sharing space and crops is in place.
This past spring, volunteers for the garden included The Civics and Government Insitute from Montclair High School, Temple Ner Tamid, Toni’s Kitchen, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church of Montclair, and YMCA Teen Traveling Camp.
Sponsors for the garden include: Mountainside Health Foundation, Red Star Paint and Decoration Center, Zaentz Hardware, O’Boyle Landscaping, Wallwood Garden, Kitchen and Bath Design Gallery, and Corbin Construction.
HOMECorp welcomes any interested supporters to contact us for our complete list of items that are needed to continue to keep this shared gardening space accessible, dynamic, and beautiful. For more information, please contact the HOMECorp office at (973) 744-4141.

S1 Bill Pending in State Senate
S-1 is a pending NJ Senate bill which proposes to replace Council on Affordable Housing (COAH), the NJ state agency charged with monitoring the development and preservation of housing choices. The affordable housing community is largely against S-1 as it appears to severely restrict future housing development for low and moderate income households.

June 15, 2010 - Trenton, New Jersey- A wide range of civil rights, environmental, housing, religious, and supportive housing and special needs groups called on the Legislature to replace COAH with a strategy that will actually produce more homes near jobs and transit, instead of adopting the deeply flawed S-1.
The groups laid out the following policies:
Visit our website, www.hcdnnj.org for a more detailed comparison chart between S-1 and our proposal.
Kelly Francis of the NAACP New Jersey State Conference and Camden County NAACP stated "We need to move forward in replacing COAH - not backward with S-1, which would be a de facto Jim Crow law."
Jeff Tittel, Sierra Club director, said that "We need a replacement for COAH that encourages new development in New Jersey through reusing shopping centers and office parks. S-1 puts a bulls eye on rural and environmentally sensitive areas like the Highlands and Pinelands."
David Zurheide, Executive Director of Newark Habitat for Humanity, said "Any replacement for COAH should make it easier for groups like Habitat for Humanity to build - S-1 makes it harder."
